Beatles come to iTunes

Apple has filled one of the biggest holes in the iTunes catalog. The Beatles catalog is now available for download.

After years of teasing, disappointment and back and forth, the Cuppertino-based company (which has become one of the most powerful forces in the music industry) and the iconic band have come to terms. It’s unclear at this time whether Apple secured exclusive digital rights to the band’s songs or if EMI, The Beatles’ record company, will be striking similar deal with other providers.

Today’s appointment of Eric Hirshberg as CEO of Activision Publishing rounds out a nine-month search by the company and will fill the hole left by the promotion of Mike Griffith earlier this year.

Activision’s excited about the move for a number of reasons, but gamers should be excited because Eric Hirshberg might have the coolest freakin’ resume of all time.

Rdio banks on clouds

The founders of two of the Internet’shighest profile ventures are getting into the music business.

Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, co-founders of Kazaa and Skype, are teaming once again to unveil Rdio (pronounced “r-dee-o”), which kicks off a limited launch today. The service aims to blend social media, online music and portability.
