App Review: Doodle Jump for iPad

Doodle Jump is one of the members of the app store royal family — and justifiably so. The title is, as advertised, insanely addictive, and achieves this with simple, but never simplistic, gameplay. The iPad version, which was long in coming, doesn’t really add to the experience, though. There’s an extra theme, which is nice, but that’s about it. And tilting the iPad (even with the lighter iPad 2) is much more tiring than playing the game on a handheld device.

Admittedly, that extra theme — a race-themed multiplayer — is a blast, though, and the game hasn’t gotten any less fun. If you don’t own a smartphone or iPod touch, this is an obvious choice. If you do, though, there’s not much incentive to pay $3 for another copy of essentially the same game.

App Review: Let’s Jump!

Jumping platform games are becoming a crowded field in the App Store, so to stand out new ones need to do something different. Let’s Jump!  is hardly revolutionary, but it gets enough right that it’s worth a second look. The universal app support — letting the same game be played on both iPhone and iPad — is very welcome and the multiplayer mode adds a few tweaks (like not killing you instantly when you miss a platform) that make the game more fun. That said, there’s a definite sense of deja vu to this app — and if you’ve grown tired of Doodle Jump at this point, you won’t find anything here to reinvigorate your love for the genre.

App Review: PAC’N-JUMP

There’s really not a lot that’s new with PAC’N-JUMP, but that doesn’t stop it from being an eminently enjoyable diversion. Stealing the successful Doodle Jump formula, the game puts Pac-Man on a vertical quest, rather than a maze-based one. And while he still gobbles up dots and power pellets, he also has a series of platforms to help him get higher — and boost the player’s score. The controls are very responsive and rather than being a one-trick pony, players can unlock additional maps that pit Pac-Man against enemies from other classic arcade games, such as Dig-Dug, Rally-X, and Galaga.  It’s a retro twist on what is already an iDevice gaming classic.

Doodle Jump’s different sort of big screen debut

Game titles in the app store have rewritten the rules of video game development – so it makes sense that they would rewrite the rules of tie-ins as well.

“Doodle Jump,” one of the most popular apps on iDevices, has announced a film partnership with Universal Pictures that will work a bit differently than the usual game/movie tie-in.
