After
the PlayStation 4 was announced, Adam Sessler grabbed me and Giant Bomb’s Jeff Gerstmann to discuss and decompress from the whole affair. Here’s the results of that conversation.

Fox News Radio National Tour
On
the heels of the tragic events in Newtown CT, the subject of video game violence has once again been thrust in the spotlight. As the discussion reached critical mass, Fox News Radio asked me to speak with several stations in their network on the subject. Here’s my conversation with KION’s Mark Carbonaro in Salinas, California.
Flood alert
To
the handful of people who subscribe to email alerts to this blog:
As you can tell, I’ve been woefully lax in keeping things updated this month. For the next day or so, I’ll be catching up, which could mean an absurd number of updates coming your way. Sorry about that – and we’ll be back to normal posting next week. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
App Review: Stray Souls: Dollhouse Story – Collector’s Edition HD
While the story in
Stray Souls: Dollhouse Story might not be the strongest in the app store, it does a masterful job of creating a spooky atmosphere that makes the story come alive. It’s well-paced and scales well to both experienced puzzle/adventure gamers and newcomers to the genre. The heroine is a bit disappointing, though, in that she sometimes comes across as someone who is entirely dependent on her husband. (For instance, she notes at one point that she had never driven before her husband taught her how.)
All in all, though, the game is a clever blend of puzzle games with a story that twists nicely. It’s certainly too intense for young players, but tweens and adults will have lots of fun with it.
Gone fishin’
I’m off to recharge my
batteries for a week and see just how much sun this Irish-descended body can handle. Because I’m not the type who can unplug easily, I’ll be doing this in an area that has no good Internet coverage, so posting will be light this week.
Look for a couple of features and product reviews – things that I’ve been meaning to do more of, but the steady flow of news this year has kept my focus elsewhere.
(Client update) Gamasutra joins the fold
Just a heads up that I’ve added Gamasutra.com to my client roster. I’ll be acting
as an editor at large for the site, contributing a couple of stories each week that dig beyond the headlines and look at the business side of gaming.
Further details – along with other recent staff moves and news of a new traffic milestone at the site – can be found at Gamasutra
Innovation Lives Here
A review of the hot new technology products available today
indicates that tech companies are leading the charge to develop new systems that better protect merchants and their customers from data breaches. “From our stand-point, there’s nothing more sacred for a merchant than protecting its customers’ information,” says Souheil Badran, senior vice president and division manager for First Data eCommerce Solutions.

Who You Know and Who They Know
In a world where the demands for people’s
attention grow exponentially, it’s hard to break through the noise, no matter how strong of a salesperson you are. And even if you do manage to capture their attention, getting customers to change their ingrained habits is even harder.
The brute force method can work – sometimes – but the hours you’ll spend on cold calls, mailings and learning the best methods to penetrate their walls is expensive. Smart sales leaders leverage their existing customer base and social contacts to build their business.

And away we go…
I’ve never been a good self-promoter. I prefer to keep my head down and work, but one of the necessities of the freelance life is making sure your stories are read – and that people know you’re out there.
So, welcome to my blog/story-roll. Here you’ll find updates on all the stories I’m writing and other flotsam and jetsam that doesn’t fit elsewhere.
