Surprise! Apple has another runaway hit on its hands!

While some may have grumbled that the latest iPhone didn’t have a 5 at the end of its name, that doesn’t seem to have stopped them from running out to get one.

Apple reports that opening weekend sales of the iPhone 4S have set a new record, selling more than 4 million units over its debut weekend. That’s more than double the amount the iPhone 4 sold when it hit shelves.

Valve Software founder sees big gaming future for Apple

Steve Jobs never had a lot of interest in the video game world, but that didn’t stop Apple from accidentally becoming one of the most influential companies in the industry.

Now, the founder of Valve Software, makers of the acclaimed “Half-Life” series and Steam digital distribution system, says he believes Apple could make Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo’s consoles irrelevant at some point in the future.

Apple unveils iPhone 4S

It was hardly a secret that Apple would be rolling out its next generation iPhone at a press event Tuesday, but the Cupertino-based company still managed to sneak in a few surprises.

The iPhone 4S, which will be available for pre-order on Oct. 7 and will launch Oct. 14, will look almost exactly like the current 4G model, but a number of under the hood enhancements could be noteworthy for the entertainment industry – as could the expansion of the iPhone’s retail footprint with the addition of Sprint to the carriers offering the phone.

Apple’s iPhone 4S announcement: All you need to know

Those of you hoping to hear news about the iPhone 5 may have been a bit disappointed by today’s Apple press event, but the iPhone 4S seems to have plenty of solid improvements on the way.

The new phones will be available for pre-order on Oct. 7 and will launch Oct. 14. Pricing will range from $199 for a 16GB version to $399 for a 64GB version.

Music biz runs for cloud cover

Just eight years after the music industry experienced one of the most radical shifts in its history, it’s finding itself on the verge of yet another revolution.

The launch of iTunes in April 2003 certainly didn’t introduce digital downloads to consumers (Napster and countless other illegal download sites were thriving at the time), but it legitimized the distribution method and made it profitable for artists and labels. Now Apple — and a host of other companies — are hoping customers are willing to walk away entirely from physically owning the music in their collection in favor of the cloud.

All hail our new Apple overlords

You don’t need to know exact iPhone or iPod sales to know Apple has a lot of money. Even the least economically focused person on earth knows the company is rich. But the comparisons are just staggering.

Prior to the debt ceiling being raised, there was a lot of media attention surrounding the fact that the company had a higher cash balance than the U.S. government – with $76.2 billion in hand vs. the government’s $73.8 billion. Now it’s aiming higher.

HP kills the TouchPad tablet – after just one month

When HP first announced the TouchPad, the words “iPad killer” were whispered on a few sites previewing the device. That’s not unusual hyperbole in the tablet world, but HP had integrated Palm’s beloved WebOS onto the system, making it very user friendly.

Today, one month after releasing the TouchPad to retail, Hewlett Packard announced plans to discontinue the device – making it one of the most colossal failures in the tablet space.
