Samsung Unveils New ‘Phablet’: Threat to Expected iPad Mini?

Apple might have scored a key courtroom victory against Samsung late last week, but the fight is hardly over between the two tech giants.

Samsung unveiled Wednesday the second generation of its Galaxy Note, a phone/tablet hybrid that saw its first incarnation sell more than 10 million units in just nine months.

Samsung nears deal with Google TV

Google TV was the biggest thing that didn’t happen at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Released with a lot of fanfare in late 2010, it immediately hit resistance and most television manufacturers quickly scrapped plans to include it in their 2011 sets.

The system probably won’t have much of a presence at the 2012 CES either, but it looks to have found an ally with one of the largest names in TV.

Initiative for 3D standard glasses gains steam

The Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative – a joint effort by Samsung, Panasonic and Sony to adopt a new technology standard for active 3D glasses – continues to attract supporters.

Philips, Sharp, TCL and Toshiba have all announced their support for the program, which hopes to eliminate the specialized glasses currently required for each manufacturer’s set.

Samsung, Panasonic, Sony team for 3D

A collective of the top television manufacturers have joined forces to make 3D TV more attractive to consumers.

Panasonic, Samsung and Sony have announced plans to collaborate with XpanD 3D to develop a new technology standard for active 3D glasses. The partnership, called the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative, aims to eliminate the specialized glasses required for each manufacturer’s set.

Apple sues Samsung over Galaxy phones and tablets

Apple’s legal team is certainly off the leash these days.

On the heels of suits filed against HTC and Nokia, Apple has filed suit against Samsung, accusing the company of using Apple’s intellectual property in several of its devices, including the Galaxy S 4G phone and Galaxy Tab tablet computer.

Samsung demos big-screen glasses-free 3D TV

Glasses free 3D is still a fair ways from making it to the living room, but Samsung is starting to test the waters.

The electronics giant is showing off a 55-inch prototype this week of a set that doesn’t require any sort of dorky headgear. Before you get out your credit cards, the company says it will be at least three years before something like this will hit the market.

The app revolution is well underway at Samsung

At this year’s CES, television manufacturers shined the bulk of their spotlight on connected TVs and the variety of apps that were on the way for the sets. At Samsung, though, customers are already embracing those apps in a big way.

The company has announced that 2 million apps have been downloaded from its marketplace since it launched last year. And the rate of adoption is escalating fast.
