The 5 biggest video game disappointments of 2013 (so far)

By flops-aliensalmost any measurement, 2013 has been an embarrassment of riches for gamers. The Last of Us earned some of the highest scores of any game this generation, BioShock Infinite is a critical darling, and the reboot of Tomb Raider was masterfully done.

But while the hit to miss ratio has been skewed towards hits, the misses have been painful. The only thing worse than a bad game is a game that was supposed to be good, but totally failed to deliver on its promise. You know, like these five stinkers:

Gearbox, Sega sued over Aliens: Colonial Marines

Aliens: aliensColonial Marines might have rankled critics, but that’s nothing compared to how it upset fans. And one fan in particular.

Plaintiff Damion Perrine filed a false advertising lawsuit against publisher Sega and developer Gearbox Software Tuesday in the Northern District of California, saying demos of the game shown at industry trade shows and public events were not accurate representations of the game that hit shelves.

Gearbox’s Pitchford on Aliens’ evolution

If Randy Pitchford’s gut is right, you have Gearbox Software co-founder Brian Martel to thank for this summer’s movie Prometheus.

Several years ago, Martel sat down with Ridley Scott to talk about Blade Runner and Alien. As the two discussed the landmark science fiction films, Scott brought out the original, by-then-dust covered storyboards to Alien and began to animatedly discuss the franchise and his love for it.

‘Ice Age’ coming to videogames

Fox is looking to extend the Ice Age.

The studio plans a trio of videogame tie-ins for the franchise — on consoles, mobile phones and Web browsers — to both whip up excitement about the film’s fourth installment this summer and give fans a way to stay engaged long after “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift” leaves theaters.
