Online retailer mistakes ‘Madden’ for ‘Mass Effect’

Some customers of online retailer Newegg got a rather unwelcome surprise earlier this week, when a screw-up by the company resulted in them getting a copy of the six-month-old ‘Madden NFL 12’ instead of the brand new ‘Mass Effect 3’ they were expecting.

Whether it’s new titles, like “Smurfs’ Village” on iPhone or old standards like “EverQuest,” publishers are in a race to offer free-to-play games — sometimes known as “freemium” games — and in many cases, it’s making them a fortune.

Peter Molyneux leaving Microsoft

One of the biggest names in Microsoft’s stable of developers is leaving the company.

Peter Molyneux, the creator of games like Fable, Populus, Theme Park, and Black & White, has announced plans to leave both Microsoft (where he serves as creative director) and his own Lionhead Studios once development is complete on his latest title, Fable: The Journey.

Apple ups showbiz-friendly features in iPad

As Hollywood continues to expand its options for how and where auds access its content, Apple is amping up the capabilities of the devices on which they consume that content, announcing Wednesday the forthcoming release of a 4G-compatible iPad, a high-def version of its Apple TV device and the expansion of its iCloud storage service to include movies.

Following much speculation regarding what innovations the next-generation iPad would feature, the company revealed that the new tablets will harness the next generation of 4G networks of Verizon, AT&T and other carriers worldwide and feature the Retina display that’s now part of the iPhone.

iPad 3: On-site details on hardware, Namco and Epic partnerships

While there weren’t any major surprises at Wednesday’s Apple event, that’s not slowing down the excitement among the Apple faithful for the new iPad.

Apple, as expected, rolled out its latest version of the popular tablet device Wednesday at a Gamasutra-attended event, showcasing a greatly improved display screen and the inclusion of 4G compatibility. And the device was supported by a pair of notable gaming companies.

LulzSec leader turns informant, feds arrest key hackers

Hacker group LulzSec, whose reign of online terror last summer compromised companies ranging from Sony Pictures to Bethesda Softworks, has been dismantled by federal officials, with the group’s leader apparently acting as an informant.

The U.S. Attorney’s office on Tuesday announced it had charged five people with computer hacking and other crimes. Hector Xavier Monsegur, better known as LulzSec leader “Sabu,” had pled guilty to those crimes.
