FIFA producer predicts women’s soccer video game

The saga of the U.S. women’s soccer team during this year’s Olympics may have been as captivating as the “Fab Five” or Michael Phelps’ quest to set an Olympic medal record, but when it comes to the world of video games, soccer is strictly a sport for men.

It’s a frustrating reality — and one that excludes a wide swath of potential players. And now the executive producer of EA’s immensely popular FIFA franchise is acknowledging the problem.In a conversation with Kotaku, EA’s David Rutter noted that while women’s soccer won’t be a feature in this year’s installment of the game (it’s too late to add it), it’s something the team is considering.

Mass layoffs hit OnLive, company assets sold

OnLive, the cloud-based streaming media company that many believed was the future of video games, reportedly laid off virtually all of its employees Friday, raising questions about its future.

The OnLive service is still functioning at present, and company spokespersons say that’s not going to change, but some insiders say a new company is being planned to rise from OnLive’s ashes.

Clown entertains kids with Steve Jobs’ stolen iPad

Earlier this week, a thief burglarized the home of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, making off with over $60,000 in jewelry and materials. Police arrested a suspect, but not before he had gotten rid of some of the merchandise.

Now, police say, one of Jobs’ old iPads was found in the hands of a clown.

Love it or hate it, the Xbox 360 isn’t going anywhere soon. It’s the oldest of the current consoles, but despite an onslaught of leaks and rumors, Microsoft has yet to officially acknowledge it’s working on a next-generation system.

In the real world, it’s a pretty safe bet that the next Xbox won’t hit stores before Christmas 2013. That means you’ve got another year — at least — with your current model. And while it might be a little long in the tooth, there’s still plenty of horsepower under the hood.

Who’s Who in Wreck It Ralph

The video game generation is about to get its own big screen love letter.

On Nov. 2, Disney will release “Wreck-It Ralph,” the story of an arcade video game villain who tries to turn things around and become a hero. It’s getting plenty of buzz for its playful premise, but in gaming circles, the film is better known as “that movie with more gaming cameos than you can shake a stick at.”

Outcry prompts EA to retreat from real-world Medal of Honor weapon sales

Electronic Arts takes pride in the realism of the Medal of Honor series. It appears, though, that the publisher might have made things a bit too real this time.

In response to negative feedback from press and consumers, EA has quit promoting sales of several real-world weapons that carried Medal of Honor branding and has removed a series of blog posts touting the products, which included a tomahawk and sniper rifle.

Buy one, get one free: Sony introduces Cross-Buy

While many were betting Sony would use its pre-Gamescom press conference as the launch pad for a new round of PlayStation 3 price cuts — or even yet another redesigned model of the home console — the electronics giant opted to leave well enough alone for the time being.

That’s not to say the company didn’t have a couple new offers up its sleeve for fans. Though hardware prices weren’t reduced, Sony did unveil a new program dubbed Cross-Buy that will allow purchasers of select PS3 games to receive the Vita version as a free bonus.
