Video game sales down 29% in June

The next generation of consoles can’t get here fast enough.

According to the NPD Group, overall video game sales were down 29 percent in June compared to last year ($699.8 million to $989.5 million). Hardware sales were hit hardest, tumbling a massive 45 percent, though game accessories — such as gift cards and Skylanders figurines — were up slightly.

Halo gets cinematic in live-action series

While Microsoft’s dream of a big screen Halo flick (originally planned to be produced by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson) is pretty much dead, the upcoming release of Halo 4 is letting the company make a different sort of Halo film.

“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” will be a series of five live-action shorts leading up to the release of Halo 4 this November. Once the game is out, the company plans to collect those episodes, add in another 15 minutes of content and release the product as a feature film, which will be sold direct-to-video.

Paul McCartney writing music for Bungie’s new game

The latest stop in the long and winding career of Sir Paul McCartney is one that no one saw coming.

The legendary musician has announced he’s presently working with game developer Bungie on an unannounced project, which is widely expected to be the company’s new game (currently codenamed Destiny).

Blizzard acknowledges Diablo III endgame weaknesses

Login error messages aside, there weren’t a lot of early complaints about Blizzard’s Diablo III. But as players get more time with the game, they’re finding a few things that are less than perfect.

That’s not surprising, especially with a game that’s played as obsessively as the role-playing hit. Blizzard, though, is acknowledging that those players are right. And that’s pretty unusual.

New PlayStation 3 model in the works?

While everyone and their cousin is waiting eagerly for the PlayStation 4, Sony may still have a few ideas up its sleeve for the PlayStation 3.

A recent filing on the FCC database describes what appears to be a new design for the console — and, at the very least, a prototype has already been built.
