20 tips for getting the most out of your Xbox 360

Love it or hate it, the Xbox 360 isn’t going anywhere soon. It’s the oldest of the current consoles, but despite an onslaught of leaks and rumors, Microsoft has yet to officially acknowledge it’s working on a next-generation system.

In the real world, it’s a pretty safe bet that the next Xbox won’t hit stores before Christmas 2013. That means you’ve got another year — at least — with your current model. And while it might be a little long in the tooth, there’s still plenty of horsepower under the hood.

Alleged Xbox ‘Durango’ development system sells for $20K on eBay

Despite plenty of leaks, Microsoft has yet to officially confirm that it’s working on the next Xbox. But the first one may already have been sold.

An eBay auction over the weekend found a buyer for a purported Xbox ‘Durango’ Development Kit — a system game developers use to create games for the upcoming console. The buyer, who remained anonymous, shelled out $20,100 for the kit, which apparently looks like a black computer tower.

Indie game Fez squares off against Microsoft

The developers of indie game darling Fez have a problem: there’s a major bug in their game. But they’re not going to fix it — and they say that’s Microsoft’s fault.

Released in April on Xbox Live, Fez garnered terrific reviews from critics. But as players explored the game, they found a number of issues. Save files were being corrupted and the game was crashing regularly. A fix was issued last month, but it was quickly yanked because it reportedly caused even more problems.

Halo gets cinematic in live-action series

While Microsoft’s dream of a big screen Halo flick (originally planned to be produced by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson) is pretty much dead, the upcoming release of Halo 4 is letting the company make a different sort of Halo film.

“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” will be a series of five live-action shorts leading up to the release of Halo 4 this November. Once the game is out, the company plans to collect those episodes, add in another 15 minutes of content and release the product as a feature film, which will be sold direct-to-video.

Activision on the block: Assessing the potential buyers

Vivendi might be getting more serious about offloading Activision-Blizzard.

Reuters reports the French conglomerate has been in talks with a number of video game (and mass media) companies about a potential sale of the industry’s top seller.

That makes for a good headline – and I have no doubt about Reuters’ report, but as the industry works itself into a frenzy trying to guess whether Microsoft, Time Warner, or Tencent will be the new home of Call of Duty and Diablo, too many people are failing to scratch the surface.

Microsoft left a lot of people hungry for details about its next-generation console system at this year’s E3. This past weekend, however, those people had plenty to chew on, courtesy of a leaked document that purports to offer plenty of previously unannounced details on the system.

Online retailer plans to “tax” Internet Explorer 7 users

Web surfers tend to be pretty loyal to their browsers. Once you figure out the shortcuts and placement of everything, it’s kind of a pain to upgrade to a dramatically revamped interface — or a new browser altogether.

The problem is, programming sites for those antiquated browsers can be a major headache. Now one online retailer is fighting back, announcing plans to add a 6.8 percent “tax” onto the purchases of anyone who visits their site using Internet Explorer 7.
